Scotland and Wales played two exciting uncapped games at the weekend as part of their preparations for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers.
Taking place just outside of Glasgow, the first game saw Wales – who finished fourth in last month’s EuroHockey Championships II – emerge with a 3-1 victory thanks to goals from Xenna Hughes, Izzy Howell and Sarah Jones who, alongside Leah Wilkinson, made her first appearance in a Welsh shirt since winning bronze with Great Britain at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Charlotte Watson – who has played nine games for Great Britain – scored the only goal for Scotland.
The hosts exacted their revenge the following day with a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Fiona Burnet and Georgia Jones. Beth Bingham drew Wales to within one goal from a penalty corner but they couldn’t find an equaliser.
These fixtures – which will not be officially recorded – are part of both teams’ preparations for the European World Cup Qualifier, taking place between 21-24 October. They will join hosts Italy, Ireland, Belarus, France, Poland and Russia to fight it out for the final place available at the 2022 Women’s Hockey World Cup.
Both of their male counterparts will also be competing in a qualifier for the 2023 Men’s Hockey World Cup at the same time. In this tournament, Wales and Scotland will be joined by France, Russia, Austria, Italy, Ireland and Poland in the battle to claim the last two places at the World Cup in India in January 2023. This qualifying event will be held in Cardiff between 21-24 October and you can buy your tickets by clicking here.
