It all started at HockeyFest 2016

HockeyFest

Nicky attended her local HockeyFest (Plym Valley Ladies hockey club) after her neighbour encouraged her and her daughter along, a year on she has completed her first season with the club and couldn’t be happier! She shares her story with us.

“After feeling inspired by the Great Britain Women's Hockey team winning gold in Rio at the 2016 Olympics I had a random conversation with my lovely neighbour who plays. They encouraged me to attend a HockeyFest fun day with my 6 year old daughter where it ignited some feeling of love towards hockey I had long forgotten about.

“I initially took my daughter along to the HockeyFest family day to see if it might be something she would be interested in. As the weather was terrible, torrential rain and very windy it was being held inside. It was mostly adults but everyone was so friendly and welcoming and they included my daughter in all the hockey activities and games. We both had a great day and I was invited along to the clubs first training session.

“Although I've always loved sport, most of my adult life hasn't included any. Occasional gym visits and runs which are few and far between meant my fitness isn't the best and after two children my weight has crept up. I thought this would be a good opportunity to do some exercise I could actually enjoy.  I hadn't played hockey for 20 years (since I was at school) so I had no idea what to expect and the prospect seemed very daunting.

“Thanks to a big nudge from my neighbours, I went to the first training session and haven't regretted it since. I joined the club and started playing in their third team on a Sunday, a league which is more laid back and fun. My team are all about developing players, supporting young school aged children and encouraging people back to hockey. Since day one I have received nothing but support from everyone, there is such a welcoming and friendly atmosphere at the club. I've had a brilliant time at both practice and in games.

“I've now just finished my first season, and I can't wait for the next! My advice to anyone thinking of starting something new would be take the risk even if it's out of your comfort zone. You haven't lost anything if it doesn't work out but if it does your life is open to great new experiences and friendships.”
